The North Central region comprises 19 states – Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The region is located in the central portion of the United States and covers a total of 1,446,918 square miles. The North Central region has a population of approximately 85.3 million, or about 28 per cent of the nation’s total.
North Central’s higher education system includes 1,468 universities and colleges, which enroll over 4.5 million undergraduate students annually in the fall. Of these institutes, 570 are public and 898 are private; 900 are four year institutes, and 568 are two year colleges. Over half of North Central’s higher educational institutes are locate in the six states of Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Missouri. North Cenral’s higher education system also includes a diverse range of notable career and technical schools, community colleges and religious institutes.
