Engineering is a field that can lead you to a huge array of exciting career opportunities. There are lots of ways that engineering applies to our daily lives, and therefore there are many options to consider for your engineering education.
Students going into engineering at a university or 4-year college can enter the first year of a Bachelor of Science (BS/ SB), Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) or Bachelor of Engineering (BE) directly from high school, or can enter into third year with an associate's degree. These are competitive 4-year degrees with opportunities for internships, co-op experiences, exchange and research projects either in student clubs or in collaboration with faculty.
University and 4-year college students usually take a set of common core courses in their first year, and then decide on a particular specialization in their sophmore year. Specialization options include automotive engineering, aeronautics and astronautics, biomedical, biological, chemical, computer, civil, industrial, environmental, electrical, materials, marine and mechanical engineering, mechatronics, nanotechnology, robotics, architecture, engineering systems and nuclear science and engineering. Many of these specializations actually have their own degrees, such as Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME), Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering (BSChE), Bachelor of Science in Electircal Engineering (BSEE), Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) and Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BArch). Engineering is a field that affects so many areas of our lives, so don't forget to check if the College or School also offers Bachelor of Arts (BA/ AB) degrees in engineering or has any interdisicplinary or combined programs (which can sometimes extend the program of study to five years). Students wanting to accelerate their studies can take a five-year combined bachelor's/ master's program.
2-year colleges also offer programs in engineering allowing students to transfer to a four-year school, obtain an associate's degree or complete pre-requisites for another program. Community college Associate of Science (AS) degrees in engineering provide the first two years of certain engineering majors. Some colleges also offer specialized programs designed to prepare students to enter the workforce after their two years of study. It is also possible to take an Associate of Arts (AA) in engineering; however, this degree program does not necessarily satisfy all the pre-requisites for entry into 4-year program. Many 2-year colleges offer related programs in engineering technology, which are covered in another section of Schools in the USA.
